The Mental Health Program is intended to support mental health services to aboriginal women and their families in Ontario. The Mental Health Coordinator and Mental health worker collaborate in the ongoing planning, development, evaluation and modification of a comprehensive range of services including prevention programs for Aboriginal women, children and youth.

Other services include the following:

  • Community based non-residential activities and services for individuals and or families, which are culturally appropriate, complement and link to existing services or programs to continue to build service capacity at the community level.
  • Intake, screening, assessment, and early intervention. Providing counselling support and education to Aboriginal women and their families.
  • Assists families in methods of coping and management in relation to their child's mental health needs.
  • Referral and treatment services, when the individual is suffering serious emotional, psychological, behavioural and/or psychiatric illness.
  • Informational/educational training sessions on mental health promotion and mental health issues within the four regions of Ontario Native Women's Association.
  • Liaise with community professionals, agencies, and staff to improve access and utilization of resources that provide services to Aboriginal women, their children and youth with emotional and behavioural disturbances.
  • The use of Contemporary and Traditional interventions
