THE MOVING FORWARD PROJECT
ABORIGINAL JUSTICE PROGRAM
The Moving Forward Project – Aboriginal Justice Program is a two year pilot program spearheaded by the Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA) to strengthen the understanding of, and provide support and education for, Aboriginal Youth between the ages of 13 to 18 through the creation, development and utilization of outreach initiatives, programs, resources and best practice approaches for Aboriginal youth to employ when reporting and following through the criminal justice system, dealing with partner and stranger violence, child abuse and neglect, all within a culturally appropriate frame work.
Our responsibility at ONWA through the Moving Forward Project – Aboriginal Justice Program is to help heal the damages of racial injustice and to educate and prepare our Aboriginal youth to be able to effectively take on the responsibility of the leadership of Aboriginal communities and of Canada overall that awaits them.
The Moving Forward Project – Aboriginal Justice Program is a step forward toward the successful implementation of The Strategic Framework to End Violence Against Aboriginal Women, September 2007, a report prepared in partnership between ONWA and the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres. The Aboriginal Justice Program is designed to assist Aboriginal youth and is part of the continuum of the ongoing and tireless work being done by ONWA to end violence against Aboriginal women and their families.
