The Housing Policy Analyst was hired with short-term funding from the Ministry of
Municipal Affairs and Housing to undertake in partnership with the Ontario Federation
of Indian Friendship Centres (OFIFC) and Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) a provincial engagement process regarding the Ontario Off-Reserve Aboriginal Housing Trust (OAHT) and deliver a report that outlines the results of the engagement and provides
recommendations on the design, delivery, and allocation of a program for off-reserve
urban and rural Aboriginal housing in Ontario, excluding the Greater Toronto Area
(GTA).
The Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA), recognises that the representation
and participation of Aboriginal women in the design, delivery and allocation of
housing in Ontario is a critical aspect of ending violence against women and
advancing the quality of life of Aboriginal women and their families. Consequently, it
is currently seeking ongoing funding to maintain the Housing Policy Analyst position beyond the scope of the Ontario Aboriginal Housing Trust to ensure that the views of Aboriginal women are represented in national, provincial and local housing policies, increase its capacity to research initiatives that address the systemic causes of Aboriginal women’s housing issues, and develop a comprehensive approach to
reducing Aboriginal women’s housing issues in Ontario.
