The Building Aboriginal Women’s Leadership (BAWL) program is intended and designed to strengthen the leadership capacity of all Aboriginal women in Ontario through the building and establishment of communication networks across the Province; starting with a series of capacity building workshops to be held in fourteen (14) communities across ONWA’s four (4) regions. The project will continue to strengthen ONWA’s Capacity to ensure:
- Aboriginal Women in Ontario have the skills, knowledge, confidence and access to act on issues that are of concern to them and their communities
- ONWA Leaders (both in governance and management roles) have the skills and knowledge to be Aboriginal leaders and govern in a cultural, democratic and accountable manner.
- There are Aboriginal Women throughout Ontario who are able to represent ONWA policy positions at the various government tables when policy is being developed and decisions are being made that will affect Aboriginal Women, their children, families and their communities.
Between Fall 2008 and March 2009, the BAWL program will have completed workshops in the following areas:
- Geraldton - Dryden
- Ginoogaming/Longlac - Sioux Lookout
- Cochrane - Hamilton
- Sudbury - Fort Erie
- Sault St. Marie - Midland
- Ottawa - Lovesick Lake (Peterborough) and;
- Kenora - Thunder Bay
The BAWL program has created a partnership with the Canadian Executive Services Organization (CESO) in order to ensure workshop material is delivered by an expert in each field. Workshop topics have been focused to expand capacity in the following areas:
- Communications & Leadership
- Financial Management/Budgeting
- Strategic Planning
- Board Roles & Responsibilities and;
- The Incorporation Process
